The South American Dome

Did you know

the Asian Clawless Otter is very teachable, and that Malaysian fishermen train the otter to drive schools of fish into their nets.

The South American Dome

This dome covers an area of 2000 square meters, and reaches a height of 25 meters. It is the largest of the three rainforest domes. The South American dome only just opened in 2003, but the plants have already grown so much that you get the feeling of being in a real rainforest with very dense vegetation. As in the other domes, there is a temperature here year round between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius and a humidity close to 100 percent.

Many different South American animals live in this dome, for example the peculiar West Indian Manatee, also known as a sea cow, and the Collared peccary. If you are lucky, you will also experience beautiful free flying macaws.

For many of our guests, the greatest experience is undoubtedly to watch the free ranging monkeys. The monkeys are very trustful and often they can be seen on the rocks along the footpaths, where they come very close to you. Just remember that the monkeys do not like to be touched. If they feel threatened, you risk being bitten.

The big waterfall

While you listen to the roar from the 15 meter tall waterfall and sense the smell of wet rainforest top soil, you can see the Manatees swim around in the lake amongst a large shoal of Black Piranhas.

Piglets in the collared peccary enclosure

The Collared peccary sow at Randers Regnskov farrow once or twice a year. The piglets stay close to their mother, while the father constantly watches over them. When the zookeepers come too close, the male warns them by smacking his teeth so loudly that it sounds as if a large door is being slammed.

Treetop walking

You can also experience the South American dome from an entirely different angle. From the top of the Mayan temple you can, if you dare, venture onto the enormous Amazonian tree and further on, onto a narrow and rocking suspension bridge that will lead you to the uppermost plateau.

If you have the courage to venture into the treetops, you will have the opportunity to get closer to the colorful birds, and you will also have a nice view of the lake.
