Some might call them peculiar, others just downright bizarre. On thing is certain though; the common tenrecs are very unique creatures, and three of these are being released in the African dome this upcoming Saturday.
The common tenrec originates from Madagascar and is among the biggest of the 30 living species of tenrecs. It measures 26-39 cm and can achieve a weight of up to 2.5 kg. Apart from being a very adaptable animal, the common tenrec is the most fecund mammal of them all. In just one litter it can give birth to 15-32 offspring which is extreme for mammals.
Furthermore, the common tenrec is known to be an ill tempered little thing. If it feels threatened, the common tenrec will open its enormous gape, exposing the 1½ cm long, sharp canines. If this doesn’t scare off the enemy, it will start to hiss, grunt or scream while erecting its bristles. If this is still not enough, it will start to jump up and down and bite, if it gets the chance. Fortunately our tenrecs are very sweet and well-behaved, so don’t hesitate to come and see them being released in their new home.
